Celebrate the Anniversary of Beyoncé's Self-Titled Album With These 5 Fashion Moments
This week marks the eighth anniversary of one of the biggest shockers (and best gifts) we still can’t get over, Beyoncé’s self-titled visual album. No promo or marketing lead up to the momentous announcement, merely a hint that a surprise to her fans was on the horizon.
Beyoncé unveiled her album at midnight EST on Friday, December 13, 2013, exclusively via the iTunes Store sans pre-release announcement, and it sold 617,000 copies in the U.S. through the week ending Sunday, December 15, 2013. The album was instantly a hit with Beyoncé’s international fanbase selling 828,773 copies globally in its first three days of sales. In addition, according to Billboard, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making Beyoncè the first woman to hit No. 1 with her first five studio albums.
The Grammy Award-winning star was silent about the release and didn’t say much even after the album dropped. The only words for her caption on Instagram she wrote regarding the album were “surprise,” along with posting a 15-second video. In the clip, she announced 14 tracks and 17 videos were part of the project.
The album features chart-toppers “Drunk In Love,” “Partition,” and “Pretty Hurts.” Take a listen to Beyoncé below.
Since then, Queen Bey has continued to thrive during her reign. She dropped her acclaimed sixth studio album Lemonade, released the Disney+ feature film Black Is King, debuted a clothing collaboration with Adidas, Ivy Park, and became the new face of luxury label Tiffany & Co. alongside her husband JAY-Z. She also holds the record for the most GRAMMYs won by any singer with a staggering 28 awards.
Moreover, throughout the years, Beyoncé has graced the world stage with her distinct style. Whether she’s donning designer gowns on the red carpet or hanging out in casual denim, there’s no denying her flawless fashion sense.
In homage to the star and her eponymous album released eight years ago, we compiled five iconic looks from the year of Beyoncé into 2014.
