Artist Tschabalala Self Partners with UGG On a Capsule Inspired By Her Art
Harlem-born artist Tschabalala Self has partnered with lifestyle brand UGG on a capsule inspired by her beautiful artwork. Self’s work is focused on the iconographic significance of the Black female body within our contemporary culture. Her art further explores the emotional, physical, and psychological impact of the Black female body and examines race, gender, and sexuality within her craft.
Self’s collection with UGG is inspired by Sounding Board, a live performance experiment she directed for the Performa 2021 Biennial at Harlem’s Jackie Robinson Park. The arrangement included three scenes centered on a sculpture reminiscent of Self’s paintings. Additionally, Self teamed up with UGG for custom footwear and outerwear for the live performance. Some designs are now available in a ten-piece capsule collection through UGG.

Senior Director, Brand Communications & Public Relations of UGG Lindsey Dicola Dashoff said in a press statement, “As part of our ongoing appreciation of artists and their work, we’re honored to partner with Tschabalala Self. Tschabalala adapts iconic UGG silhouettes to her canvas-based mixed-media aesthetic, adding beautiful, bold colors and unexpected details to our signature styles.”
The collection features three high-heeled suede boots with vibrant colors that mimic the palette of Sounding Board. In addition to the heeled boots, the Classic Short, Classic Mini, and Coquette boots feature a chestnut and pink ombre colorway, inspired by Self’s sculpture, Loveseat. UGG will also sell a black and white matching checkered pattern boot, coat, and bag, with a nod at Self’s painting Ol’Bay. Finally, the collection wraps with the Ultra Mini boot, a vibrant marbled yellow and blue pattern reminiscent of Self’s painting Loner. All of Self’s art truly comes to life on foot in this capsule.
In a press release, Self said, “Partnering with UGG felt natural and is an exciting addition to my practice. It’s a passionate brand with tactile pieces that effortlessly mirror my vision, so this collaboration is very special to me.”
The collection will be available for purchase nationwide on March 1, and the second drop of the collection will come on March 15. Click here to see the collection for yourself.
