Transformative lyricist Genesis Owusu dropped a video for his song “Black Dogs!” that continues to push the bounds of liberation for creatives across the diaspora. From his 2021 debut album Smiling With No Teeth, this track taunts viewers' perspectives as Owusu shapeshifts through emotion.
The Ghanaian-Australian artist is no newbie at ferociously breaking boundaries in style and sound. Owusu is known for providing a thought-provoking and layered experience through his artistry. There is a violent (wild) intimacy created as Owusu stands as the lone subject for his video. We watch his body convulse and morph, finally taking up the space that was never meant for bodies like his own. Owusu releases the weight of navigating the turmoil, a raw reflection of his day-to-day life.
“I really wanted to capture the tension and the rising chaos of the song in video form, and Daniela Federici (director) knew how to bring that energy in spades, but also in a really artful way,” notes Owusu,” via press release. He adds of the track, "It’s a straight-to-the-point song encompassing a day in the life of me or just any Black person in Australia. It’s not that I’m getting abused by police every day, but it’s all the little microaggressions. Sonically speaking, it plays into how I feel every day, going into white spaces and feeling a bit paranoid."
Recently, Owusu has been in the spotlight, receiving 2021’s “Album of the Year” at the ARIA Awards and Triple J’s “Australian Album of the Year." He wrapped up 2021 on Obama’s famous end-of-year favorite picks. Off its heels, Owusu dived into 2022 with his U.S. late-night TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
This spring, he is set to hit stages with his first-ever North American tour kicking off in San Francisco. Owusu’s soulful radiance and multifaceted vocal tones are sure to leave his audience captivated. Click here to purchase tickets to one of his shows.
