LaQuan Smith has redefined the meaning of fashion and how women feel while wearing his designs. The NY-based designer not only creates luxury but also makes modern-day women feel good in any room they walk in. Smith has dressed a laundry list of women, including Beyoncé during her 2023 Renaissance Tour, Jennifer Lopez for the 2020 American Music Awards, and most recently, Presidential Candidate Madame Vice President Kamala Harris, wearing a custom Laquan Smith at the Black Congressional Dinner in Arizona.

His recent collaboration with Samsung for the NYFW Spring/Summer 2025 collection was a dream—literally. Titled “Lucid Dream,” the limited-edition line of luxury sleepwear was inspired by Samsung's innovative Galaxy Ring. The four-piece collection, which is now available for purchase, includes two men’s and two women’s pieces. The concept is from the idea of wearing sleepwear to day wear, showcasing the 24/7 wearability of the Galaxy Ring.

We spoke to Smith about his Samsung collaboration, the vision behind the collection, and the women who inspired this to come to light. He talks about the color story and how it plays a crucial role in design, among many other things.

LaQuan, you have designed many collections centered around women who desire to look their best. What inspired you to create a collection inspired by sleepwear?

The inspiration for this collection came from the desire to merge the comfort of sleepwear with high fashion's glamour. I envisioned a collection where sensuality and modernity collide, capturing the essence of a woman who navigates the concrete jungle of New York with confidence. By incorporating elements like delicate fabrics and bold animalistic prints, I wanted to celebrate the duality of strength and softness. Sleepwear is inherently intimate, and I wanted to amplify that feeling with unapologetically feminine layers that embody both elegance and a wild edge.

Samsung is an incredible brand that has created technology to elevate everyday life. What was the process of creating a collection that is centered around technology?

Working with Samsung was an exciting journey into integrating fashion and technology. We focused on creating a collection where tech elements complement the luxurious fabrics and bold designs. The process involved exploring innovative materials and techniques, like fabrics that react to different environments or light, to infuse a sense of modernity into the collection. This collaboration aimed to enhance the narrative of animalistic glamour and cutting-edge style, allowing the collection to seamlessly blend traditional luxury with forward-thinking technology.

The sleepwear trend is quite the catch, so what can we expect from this collection?

This collection is all about striking a balance between fierce, animalistic glamour and the allure of sleepwear. Expect to see luxurious fabrics like silk organza and transparent horse skin combined with exotic prints such as leopard and python patterns. The severe cuts and bold silhouettes retain my signature style, while the integration of elements like ostrich feathers adds an editorial fantasy. Each piece transitions beautifully between day and night, embodying the essence of a woman who is both delicate and powerful.

Vibrant colors play a role in this collection. How did you come up with the color concept?

The color concept was inspired by the idea of renewal and transformation. The blush pink flamingo hues evoke fragility and sensuality, creating a soft yet impactful palette that contrasts with the bold animalistic prints. This interplay of colors reflects the collection's theme of navigating the modern world with both grace and fierceness. Each shade was chosen to highlight different facets of the collection, from the delicate to the daring, ensuring a harmonious yet striking visual narrative.

If there is one thing you can say someone should feel from this collection, what would you say it is?

I want every woman who wears this collection to feel a profound sense of empowerment and elegance. The pieces are designed to make a statement—whether you’re lounging at home or stepping into the world. It’s about feeling unapologetically bold and beautifully feminine, capturing the essence of strength and sensuality as you navigate through life’s moments.

Who are the women who have shaped the way you design?

Many incredible women have influenced my design journey. My mother has always been a source of inspiration with her grace and sophistication. Icons like Naomi Campbell and Diana Ross have also profoundly impacted my vision with their timeless elegance and fearless style. These women represent a blend of strength and femininity that I strive to capture in my designs, embodying the very essence of the modern woman I create for.
