LaQuan Smith's Spring/Summer 2024 Collection Review

LaQuan Smith does many things well, but what he's expertly mastered the most is how to make women and men feel their sexiest. The Queens-born designer displayed his spring/summer 2024 collection at Skylight at Essex Crossing on Monday evening (Sept. 11), which embodied confidence, provocativeness and an edgy attitude that is authentically New York City.

As guests found their seats in the impressively spacious venue (the front row included notables like Saweetie, Victoria Monet, Coco Jones, Laverne Cox, Fabolous, Mary J. Blige, Quinta Brunson and Babyface), they were soon invited into the designer's otherworldly universe. Engine-revving sounds hushed the room before the garage door opened at the end of the walkway. A red light cast over the dark room, signaling the show's beginning. The models fiercely strutted to energetic remixes provided by DJ Sliink, pounding their heels and boots to the beats of Jadakiss' "Knock Yourself Out", DaBaby's "Shake Sumn" and Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You".

The pieces leaned more towards futuristic elements (there were stunning metallics in purple, turquoise and silver) yet Smith's house codes were still on full display. Each look showcased clean tailoring and glamourous silhouettes that embraced curves, while also giving more insight into how the designer wants to expand further into menswear. Highlights included an electric-blue mini dress, a top made with a cascade of crystals paired with oversized jeans that was reminiscent of Beyoncé's Dangerously In Love debut album cover, a sharp crocodile-green blazer with matching short-shorts and a motorcycle jacket dipped in silver chrome.

"The Spring / Summer 2024 collection is all about sci-fi glamour. With ultra-crisp tailoring, bold proportions, and a highly technical treatment of materials, the collection takes us into a futuristic LaQuan Smith universe. I had balance on my mind," the designer stated in a press release. "Vibrant jewel tones punctuated with high-octane metallics, trompe-l'œil and embossed leathers, and airy silk viscose—all treated with lightness and intentionally transitional. This season was also an opportunity to dive further into my proposition for menswear. I explored the evolution of the brand’s codes, translating our signature glamour and sensuality into fresh outfitting for the modern, captivating, and unapologetic LaQuan Smith man and woman. They are ready for whatever the future holds."
