The Roots Picnic is back live for the first time since 2019 and promises an experience that no one will forget. On June 4-5, 2022, the Mann Center at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia will be illuminated by headlining sets from Jazmine Sullivan, Wizkid, Summer Walker, Kamasi Washington, and a Mary J. Blige x Roots collaboration.
The lineup includes Chief Keef, Yebba, Tierra Whack, Kirk Franklin, Masego, G Herbo, and more. The stacked roster also includes J Period Live Mixtape with Black Thought, Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, and the Soulquarians Jam Session with Musiq Soulchild, Keyshia Cole, and SWV.
“After a long two years, we are excited to announce the return of the Roots Picnic to Philly with two days of music and culture at the Mann at Fairmount Park,” Shawn Gee, President of Live Nation Urban, Roots manager, and Roots Picnic co-founder shared in a press release. “This year, Black Thought, Questlove, and I attempted to curate a lineup that broke through the genre barriers that often separate us in black culture. To be able to book Mickey Guyton, Kirk Franklin, G Herbo, Wizkid, Wallo & Gillie, and Mary J. Blige on the same lineup was a dream come true.”
The festival will feature a live podcast stage curated by WALL0267 and Gillie Da King this year. In addition, shows such as Rory and Mal, Jemele Hill Is Unbothered, Questlove Supreme, Whorible Decisions, Million Dollaz Worth of Game, and more will take the stage for an interactive experience with the audience.
With a historic rap sheet of phenomenal lineups, the festival has always been about community for the Roots. The Roots Picnic was born with the intention of the band bringing their hometown together and fostering the environment that’s shown them so much love. The entire event will be streamed on The Roots’ official YouTube channel for those who can’t make it to the live shows.
